Time for change, says LibDem by-election candidate

Liberal Democrats in Southwark have announced Martin Shapland as their candidate for the Newington by-election caused by the resignation of Neil Coyle.

Commenting on the upcoming election, Martin said:

“In his resignation letter, Mr Coyle said that: ‘The time has come for a change.’  I couldn’t agree more, which is why I want to stand up to give Newington residents the representation they have been denied for nearly a year.

“Whether it is Labour giving up on affordable housing, building just 44 council homes while disposing of 1,700, or the ‘Golden Goodbyes’ they have just voted  themselves while forcing through cuts to key services or waiting ten months to resign after barely attending council meetings since May 2010, it is clear that Labour put the Labour Party, not Southwark residents, first. The time has come for change.

“Newington residents need a strong voice on the Council and at City Hall.  That's why local residents should back their former local councillor Caroline Pidgeon for Mayor and Liberal Democrats for the London Assembly and two Southwark by-elections in May. Only the Liberal Democrats have a plan to tackle London’s housing crisis where Labour and the Conservatives have failed.”
