What happened to our tube station?

Residents around the Bricklayers Arms have been left wondering what happened to their new tube station after Council plans showed there will now be no stop there.

Transport for London (TfL) consulted in 2014 about proposals to extend the Bakerloo line from Elephant & Castle to Lewisham with two possible branches along the Old Kent Road and Walworth Road.  Over 15,000 people responded to the consultation.

Last December TfL announced the Old Kent Road as its preferred route with two stations there.  The consultation highlighted that residents’ preferred choice were stations at the Bricklayers Arms roundabout and by Burgess Park.

In its new regeneration plan for the Old Kent Road area though, the Council states that the two new Bakerloo line stations will be around Tesco Old Kent Road, and between Commercial Way and Brimmington Park.  No explanation is given for the changes.

The station locations proposed by the Council would be a considerable distance from the sites preferred by residents.  A station at Bricklayers Arms would be a major interchange with local buses travelling along Great Dover Street, Tower Bridge, New Kent and Old Kent Roads.  It would also be a reasonable distance by tube from Elephant.

The council consultation on its Old Kent Road Area Action Plan runs until 4 November.  The document states the proposed station locations “may change and will be subject to further feasibility work” so residents still have a chance to make their views known.

Southwark’s Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesperson, Councillor Damian O’Brien, said:

“This has all the hallmarks of a typical Labour Southwark consultation where local residents give their views but the Council does what it wants anyway.

“Just a few months ago, residents said they wanted a station at Bricklayers Arms.  Now the Council has wiped the option off the map with no explanation or consultation.  No wonder residents are asking where their new tube station has gone.

“A new Bakerloo line station at the Bricklayers Arms is common sense.  It is a major traffic intersection and is a good distance from the Elephant.  It would relieve the massive overcrowding on the buses and reduce traffic and air pollution.

“The new station is much further down the Old Kent Road and yet the Council has not even explained why residents are being ignored, especially with hundreds of new homes on the way in the area.  It is a 15-minute walk from the Bricklayers Arms to Tesco.

Liberal Democrats will keep on fighting residents’ corner.  We must make clear to the Council that it should stick to having a Bakerloo line station at the Bricklayers Arms.”
